President Tinubu Moves to Slash Food Prices Nationwide

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered a Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee to fast-track measures aimed at reducing food prices across Nigeria.

‎The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, disclosed this directive on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, in Abuja during a capacity-building workshop for Senate correspondents.

‎Abdullahi said the President’s instruction focuses on ensuring safe passage of agricultural produce along transport routes nationwide, in order to lower logistics costs that contribute to high market prices.

‎“The President has given a matching order with a Federal Executive Council committee already handling it on how we are going to promote safe passage of agricultural foods and commodities across our various routes in the country,” Abdullahi stated.

‎Despite ongoing interventions, food remains unaffordable for millions of Nigerians, a challenge the minister admitted must be urgently tackled. He explained that the new directive forms part of Tinubu’s broader vision of achieving food sovereignty—an approach that goes beyond production to ensure affordability, accessibility, and nutritional value on a sustainable basis.

‎As part of this plan, the federal government will soon roll out a Farmer Soil Health Scheme designed to boost productivity. In addition, a cooperative reform initiative is being prepared to mobilise resources and empower rural farmers.

‎“Mr. President has shown tremendous interest in the cooperative sector as a veritable tool for resource mobilisation, economic activity generation, and livelihood improvement for members,” Abdullahi added.

‎The workshop, themed “Parliamentary Reporting: Issues, Challenges and Responsibilities,” was attended by Senate Committee on Media Chairman, Senator Yemi Adaramodu; former presidential aide, Senator Ita Solomon Enang; and the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Professor Abubakar Sulaiman.
