‎NNL Restricts Indebted Clubs from Registering for 2025/26 Season

In preparation for the 2025–2026 season, the Nigeria National League (NNL) has barred Heartland FC, Akwa United, and other clubs with outstanding debts from registering.

According to a circular signed by Chief Operating Officer Danlami Alanana on September 9, 2025, clubs that owe money to players, coaches, or administrators will not be permitted to register.

‎The clubs affected by this decision include former NPFL Champions Akwa United FC, Heartland FC, Gombe United, Lobi Stars, and Sunshine Stars, all of which have recently been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

‎The league organization stressed that registration will only be granted once these clubs can provide verifiable proof of compliance with the rulings from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Players Status and Arbitration Committee.

‎The NNL indicated that this decision is intended to safeguard the welfare of players and officials while fostering professionalism and financial responsibility throughout the league.

‎”Clubs that are indebted to players, coaches, and administrators, with cases resolved by the NFF Players Status and Arbitration Committee, must adhere to the committee’s rulings. Compliance is essential before clubs will be permitted to register,” the circular stated.

‎The NNL also cautioned that failure to comply could result in exclusion from league activities, which would adversely affect both the competitive and commercial status of the defaulting clubs.

‎By implementing this policy, the NNL has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting integrity within Nigeria’s second-tier league. It also aims to ensure that the rights of footballers and technical staff are upheld.

‎The NFF PSAC has once again asserted its authority against contract violations and illegal practices in Nigerian football, having previously enforced a similar ban before the start of the NPFL.
