LNG Uses AI to Increase Exports and Domestic Gas Supply

The importance of artificial intelligence in enhancing operational effectiveness, safety, and productivity throughout its vast gas infrastructure has been underlined by Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited.

‎Speaking to a global audience of more than 50,000 attendees from 150 countries at a panel discussion at the ongoing Gastech Exhibition and Conference in Milan, Italy, Mr. Olakunle Osobu, the Deputy Managing Director of NLNG, gave this insight.

‎The session was titled, “Operational Excellence Through the Application of Artificial Intelligence Technologies.”

‎Osobu clarified that NLNG’s integration of AI was not merely strategic but vital, motivated by the scale and intricacy of its operations, alongside the company’s initiative to enhance domestic supply and exports.

‎“With more than 10,000 operators and technicians collaborating towards a unified objective, the implementation of AI is not just necessary but mandatory,” he stated.

‎He pointed out that NLNG’s commitment to continuous improvement and its zero-incident policy required intelligent systems that could steer operations, enhance safety, and streamline decision-making.

‎“We have integrated AI into every facet of our operations – from safety measures to machine efficiency. It has rendered us more effective, agile, and productive.

‎“Our goal is to enhance everything we undertake, every single day,” Osobu remarked.

‎In discussing advancements in workforce training, he noted that AI and visual technologies had drastically cut down the time needed to train plant operators.

‎He mentioned that previously, it took between six and twelve months to train an operator to an expert level. With the aid of AI, this is now accomplished in just two to three months.

‎He elaborated that this reduction directly resulted in heightened productivity and decreased costs.

‎Osobu added that AI had also revolutionized equipment management, allowing machines to operate more swiftly and efficiently, while offering actionable insights that simplify intricate decisions.
