Eric Chelle, the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, revealed the technical mistake his team made during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against South Africa on Tuesday.
Chanel witnessed the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with South Africa at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.
It is important to note that William Troost-Ekong’s own goal allowed Bafana Bafana to take the lead in the 22nd minute. Nevertheless, Fulham defender Calvin Bassey equalized for Nigeria before the halftime break.
In a post-match interview with reporters, Chelle pointed out that the risk his team took by playing one-on-one against the hosts in the first half led to the Super Eagles conceding a goal.
“For me, it was a fantastic game, filled with a lot of intensity and aggression,” Chelle remarked.
“Due to the condition of the pitch, both teams attempted to perform well. Congratulations to South Africa for their great game, and to the Nigerian team as well.

“We aimed to take a risk in the first half by staying one-on-one behind because winning was our goal.
“We decided to take a risk, and just 22 minutes in, we conceded a goal, but after that, we maintained the mindset to come back.”
Chelle’s team now occupies the third position following the result of the match, trailing behind South Africa and the Benin Republic.
