Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Set to Resume Senate Duties After Six-Month Suspension

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, is expected to return to plenary later this month following the expiration of her six-month suspension from the National Assembly.

‎Her counsel, Victor Giwa, confirmed in Abuja that the senator, who is currently in London on vacation, has concluded plans to resume legislative duties when the Senate reconvenes on September 23.

‎“Actually, she’s ready to resume her term. She’s in London. Everything is in place, and the six months have expired. The only thing left is her resumption,” Giwa said, adding that the Senate leadership was not expected to obstruct her return.

‎He further stated that indications from within the upper chamber suggest she will be welcomed back without resistance. “We have been told that even the leadership of the Senate is ready to welcome her. There is no obstacle at all,” he assured.

‎Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6 over alleged insubordination, after she rejected the relocation of her designated seat during plenary. The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions recommended her suspension, which also stripped her of aides, office privileges, and salaries.

‎The lawmaker had argued that her suspension was politically motivated, linking it to her petition accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment—a claim the chamber dismissed. She later challenged her suspension in court and obtained a judgment she claimed supported her recall.

‎However, the Senate insisted the disciplinary action must run its full six-month course. In July, her attempt to return sparked a standoff as security operatives denied her entry despite the presence of her supporters.

‎With the suspension now expired, Giwa maintained that pending legal tussles would not affect her resumption. Efforts to obtain comments from Senate leadership were unsuccessful.
