PenOp Champions Liver Health, Debunks Detox Myths at Wellness Session

PenOp

In a significant stride toward championing corporate wellness and fostering a healthier workforce, the Pension Fund Operators Association of Nigeria (PenOp) hosted a knowledge-sharing session on August 31, focused on liver health. The well-attended event drew over 300 participants from across the pension industry, providing a dynamic platform for learning and engagement on a vital health topic. According to a statement released by the association, the session, introduced by Adaobi Okoye, Head of Human Resources at PenOp, featured Dr Akinkumi Ilori, a distinguished medical doctor and public health expert, who delivered an extensive presentation on liver function and disease prevention.

The report has it that Dr Ilori outlined the critical and multifaceted role of the liver in maintaining bodily functions, emphasising its importance in detoxification, metabolism, and vitamin storage. He stressed the global rise in liver-related diseases and highlighted the urgent need for a proactive and preventive approach. Dr Ilori detailed the major causes of liver damage, including viral hepatitis, which can be mitigated by vaccination, excessive alcohol consumption, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease—a condition closely linked to diet and lifestyle. He also discussed drug-induced injuries and various autoimmune conditions that can compromise liver function, noting that prevention and timely medical intervention are crucial in avoiding long-term complications.

The session also delved into crucial lifestyle risks, with Dr Ilori delivering a strong message that “there is no safe level of alcohol consumption,” regardless of volume. He pointed to obesity as a leading contributor to liver disease, often appearing alongside other chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. In an effort to provide clear, actionable advice, the expert guided participants through key diagnostic methods for detecting liver conditions, such as liver function tests, imaging techniques, and biopsies. The presentation also provided a stark warning about the severe consequences of untreated liver conditions, which may progress to cirrhosis, liver failure, or even cancer.

The session was not just about identifying risks; it also focused on providing tangible solutions. It effectively debunked common myths surrounding the efficacy and safety of “detox teas” and supplements, warning participants of the potential health risks posed by these unregulated products. The talk also drew attention to other dangerous substances like steroids and energy drinks. To conclude, Dr Ilori strongly advocated for key preventive strategies, including embracing healthy nutrition, engaging in regular exercise, and ensuring the responsible use of medication. PenOp, in closing, reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the continuous professional and personal development of its members, announcing that this liver health session is part of a regular series of knowledge-sharing events.
