FG Launches Civil Service Overhaul with Staff Audit, Skills Review

In a move aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Nigerian government has launched a comprehensive reform of the Federal Civil Service.

In a statement posted on the X page of the Ministry of Information and National Orientation on Friday said the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), Didi Walson-Jack, inaugurated two committees to conduct a service-wide personnel audit and skills gap analysis.

The inauguration conducted during the week was part of the initiative aimed at creating a more efficient and modern civil service by accurately determining the size, structure, and skill composition of the workforce.

The audit will create a verifiable digital database linked to National Identification Numbers (NIN) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVN).

This is intended to eliminate ghost workers, correct staff record inconsistencies, and provide a precise profile of the workforce.

Walson-Jack explained that the project is not punitive but rather a data-driven effort to reposition the civil service. It seeks to identify current and future skills gaps in crucial areas like ICT, project management, and data analysis.

The findings will be used to improve training programs, digitise human resources using the Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS), and achieve cost savings by eliminating redundancies.

The Steering Committee, chaired by the HCSF, includes top officials from various government offices and will provide policy direction.

The Project Implementation Committee, chaired by Danjuma Kalba, will manage the operational aspects of the project, including data collection and compliance checks.

Kalba praised the reform as a strategic initiative aimed at ensuring value for money and strengthening institutions.

The committees have been tasked with completing their work promptly, with the Project Implementation Committee expected to deliver its findings within four months, and the Steering Committee within six months.

The successful execution of this audit is seen as a foundational step toward building an efficient and incorruptible civil service.
