On Wednesday, August 27, WhatsApp introduced a new artificial intelligence feature named “Writing Help,” aimed at enhancing the clarity, professionalism, and ease of composing messages directly within the app.
This feature enables users to draft a message, click on a pencil-shaped icon, and receive suggestions to refine tone, style, or clarity—similar to tools like ChatGPT, but seamlessly integrated into WhatsApp itself.
As per Meta, the tool utilises a proprietary technology known as “Private Processing,” which encrypts user requests and transmits them anonymously to Meta’s servers. The company asserts that neither WhatsApp, Meta, nor any third party can access or retain the content of the messages. Suggestions are sent back to the user’s device without leaving any digital footprint.
Meta has stressed that no data is retained on its servers, and neither the original messages nor the AI-generated suggestions can be associated with a specific user or accessed by company personnel.
To utilise this feature, users must first enable Private Processing in their app settings. Once activated, a pencil icon will appear next to the text input area. The tool processes a message only after the user clicks the icon.

Users can select from various rewriting styles, including professional, humorous, supportive, or error correction. The assistant produces different iterations of the message, allowing the user to retain the original or adopt a suggested version. Recipients will not be aware if a message was modified using the tool.
This new feature signifies WhatsApp’s expanding role beyond personal messaging. With many users employing the app for business purposes, including through WhatsApp Business, Meta aims to assist users in sounding more professional—particularly in conversations held in non-native languages—or swiftly correcting typos and grammatical errors.
Initially trialled with a limited group of users, the tool is now officially being rolled out in English for Android and iOS users in the United States and other countries.
Meta intends to broaden support to more users in the future.
