‎Stanley Nwabali Set For Medical Tests Amid WC Qualifiers

Stanley Nwabali

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is in a race against time to recover for Chippa United’s league match against Orlando Pirates on Sunday, as well as for Nigeria’s important 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

‎The 29-year-old was taken off on a stretcher in the 35th minute during Chippa’s 1-0 loss to Richards Bay on Tuesday, raising concerns about a potentially serious injury.

‎On Thursday, August 28, South African journalist Austin Ditlhobolo reported that Nwabali is set to undergo medical examinations this week, with the results likely to influence his availability for both his club and the national team.

‎”Nwabali is aiming to be fit for the match against Orlando Pirates on Sunday and the World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Bafana Bafana. He will be undergoing medical tests,” Ditlhobolo stated.

‎This situation has caused significant worry within Nigeria’s camp. The Super Eagles currently sit fourth in Group C, having accumulated seven points from six matches, and are six points behind the leaders, South Africa. With only two matches remaining before the final qualifying round in October, securing victories against Rwanda and South Africa is crucial to maintain their chances.

‎Nwabali, who has solidified his position as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, has become an essential player in the team, earning 21 caps and delivering reliable performances.

‎If he is unable to play, Coach Eric Chelle may have to rely on less experienced players like Adebayo Adeleye, Amas Obasogie, or Ebenezer Harcourt.

‎Compounding the pressure, Nigeria’s qualifier on September 6 will take place away against their long-standing rivals South Africa in Johannesburg—a match that holds additional significance due to the historic rivalry between the two nations.
