FG Doubles Nigerian Passport Fees

The Federal Government, FG, has announced a 100% increase in the cost of a standard Nigerian passport.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlab on Thursday said the move will take effect on September 1, 2025.

NIS stated that the fee hike is intended to maintain the passport’s “quality and integrity.”

The new rates for applications submitted within Nigeria are as follows: a 32-page passport with five-year validity will cost N100,000 while a 64-page passport with 10-year validity will cost N200,000.

Passport fees for Nigerians living abroad will remain unchanged, at $150 for the 32-page booklet and $230 for the 64-page booklet. This is the second time in one year that passport fees have been increased.

A previous hike in August 2024, which also took effect in September of that year, saw prices rise from N35,000 to N50,000 for the 32-page passport and from N70,000 to N100,000 for the 64-page passport.

At that time, the NIS spokesperson, DCI Kenneth Udo, similarly cited the need to ensure the quality and security of the travel document as the reason for the increase.

The Service reiterated its commitment to balancing quality service delivery with the need to ensure passport services remain accessible to all citizens.

The announcement sparked mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media, particularly on X, where many expressed displeasure over the recent increase.

While some users applauded the move, others described it as an act of wickedness. Several pointed out that with the new rates, junior academics such as graduate assistants and assistant lecturers might struggle to afford a passport.

Others, however, argued that regardless of the fee, Nigerians would still seek to travel abroad if circumstances required them to leave the country.
