The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called for the full implementation of the 2009 agreement reached by the Federal Government and the union to avert the looming ASUU strike.
The Chairman of ASUU, University of Port Harcourt, Comrade Omeh O. Ngwoke, who made the call during a press briefing on Tuesday, August 26, at ASUU Secretariat, UNIPORT, Rivers State, recalled that the issues surrounding the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement had been the cause of the incessant conflicts between the Union and the Federal Government.
Comrade Ngwoke maintained that ASUU rejects in totality the recent launched Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF) describing it as a distraction and a snare aimed at further impoverishing its members.

The Chairman of ASUU UNIPORT while citing several renegotiation committees that have been inaugurated by successive administrations which never achieved the desired result noted that the 2009 agreement was supposed to be renegotiated every three years to reflect the prevailing economic realities.

Ahead of the stakeholders meeting scheduled to be held on August 28, 2025, for further deliberations on the issue, Comrade Ngwoke urged the Federal Government to use the opportunity to pay urgent attention to the welfare of academic staff and the plight of tertiary education in Nigeria, especially in public universities.
The ASUU members conducted a solidarity walk to drive home their demands carrying placards with various inscriptions such as Honour the 2009 agreement, Increase our salaries, stop the victimization of our members among others.
