Rivers United’s Technical Manager, Finidi George, has expressed satisfaction with his side’s performance in their opening fixture of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season against reigning champions Remo Stars.
The highly anticipated clash at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, Abeokuta, produced early drama. In just the 3rd minute, Aniekeme Okon struck against his former employers to register the first goal of the new NPFL campaign. However, the lead was short-lived as Remo’s new signing, Victor Mbaoma, restored parity in the 9th minute, ensuring the champions stayed level before a spirited crowd.
Speaking during the post-match press conference, Coach George admitted the contest was intense, with both teams creating chances in a game of fine margins. He described the draw as a fair outcome, particularly given the challenge of facing Remo Stars away from home.

While he attributed Rivers United’s conceded goal to a costly defensive lapse, he insisted such errors are part of football. Finidi added that he retains full confidence in his players, stressing that there is enough time to regroup and prepare better for their upcoming fixtures.
On the other end, Remo Stars’ head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, revealed that a win would have been extra special as it would mark his 100th game in charge of the club. Nevertheless, he accepted the draw with satisfaction, acknowledging Rivers United’s quality and the difficulty of the encounter.
Ogunmodede emphasized that playing away from their Ikenne base was not an excuse, noting that his team has consistently delivered strong performances both home and away.
He concluded that he welcomes tough opponents, believing they provide valuable lessons that ultimately strengthen his squad and prove that the pride of Rivers is Nigeria’s biggest club.
