Nigeria Marks International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism

In the past decade, Nigeria has suffered grievously from terrorism, with lives lost to violence perpetrated by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups operating in different parts of the country, leading to millions of Nigerians being displaced.

The International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism was established by the United Nations to honour and support those affected by terrorist acts.

The day, observed annually on August 21, emphasises the need to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of victims and survivors.

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, our correspondent interacted with residents of Port Harcourt on the implications of terrorist acts on Nigeria.

Speaking with a survivor of a terrorist attack, who pleaded anonymity while describing the lasting impact of the attack, detailed the physical and emotional scars that have continued to affect his life and family.

A social commentator, Mr. Mufasa Eyinmosa, who stressed that terrorism damages communities, creates distrust and disrupts social structure, urged governments to prioritise comprehensive support for victims like mental health services, financial aid, and legal assistance, as well as invest in technology to prevent terrorist attacks.

Disaster Management Officer, Nigeria Red Cross Society, Rivers State Branch, Mr. Izoma Godwin, who outlined the government’s efforts, highlighted the provision of financial aid and medical aid to support victims.

This year’s theme is “The Legacy of Terrorism: Remembering and Honouring Victims Worldwide.”

The International Day of Remembrance underscores the devastating impact of terrorism and the need for solidarity with victims and also calls on governments, communities, and individuals to unite against terrorism and work towards a peaceful and secure future.
