Federal Government Expands 3MTT to Create Jobs Through Outsourcing

The Federal Government has announced plans to link thousands of young Nigerians trained under its 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme with job opportunities through partnerships with Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies.

Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, said the initiative goes beyond training, focusing on creating real employment pathways for participants.

Now nearing its second year, the 3MTT programme has already trained over 117,000 Nigerians in various digital skills, with some graduates already engaged. The skills range from digital marketing, data analysis, and SEO, to project management tools, CRM platforms, cloud navigation, graphic design, and UX/UI design.

Tijani explained that BPO firms will absorb trained Nigerians and outsource their services to international clients. He also revealed plans to set up “talent cities by refurbishing government buildings into modern hubs where outsourcing companies can operate and employ programme fellows.

“The goal is to ensure that Nigerians trained with digital skills are not left idle but connected to global opportunities,” Tijani said.

The programme is open to all Nigerians who can read and write, regardless of formal education. Backed by partners including MTN, Airtel, IHS, and UNDP, many participants have also benefited from stipends during internships.

According to Tijani, some tech companies have already committed to hiring 3MTT graduates. But the government’s bigger ambition is to scale the programme so Nigerian youth can also take up remote jobs abroad.

Highlighting Nigeria’s demographic edge, Tijani noted that with an average age of 16.9 years and nearly 70% of the population under 30, the country is well-positioned to supply skilled talent at a time when developed economies are grappling with ageing workforces.
