Flying Eagles Begin Final World Cup Prep in Abuja

‎The Nigerian U-20 national team, known as the Flying Eagles, has begun their final preparations for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile at the NFF/FIFA Goal Project in Abuja.

‎Head coach Aliyu Zubairu is supervising the team’s readiness as they enter the most crucial phase of their three-part training program.

‎In a press conference, Zubairu conveyed his optimism regarding the preparations, stating that they are now operating at “top gear.” He disclosed that the squad includes a mix of local players from Nigeria and those based internationally.

‎“We have invited some players from abroad, Nigerian players abroad, and some from within the country,” Zubairu confirmed.

‎“Although most of the players we invited from abroad have not yet received permission from their clubs to join us, we are working with those available to ensure we build a very strong and competitive team for Nigeria U-20.”

‎A significant focus during the camp has been on David Stockbrink, a talented player from Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands. Stockbrink was previously called up for the African Cup of Nations but had to withdraw due to an injury.

‎“We are still evaluating him,” Zubairu remarked about Stockbrink.

‎“Even though we invited him for AFCON based on recommendations from others, I have not seen him play myself. However, since he came highly recommended, I agreed to his inclusion.

Unfortunately, while we were in Casablanca, he got injured and couldn’t participate in AFCON, not even for training. But he is here now, and this is the first training session, so we will continue to assess all the players.”

‎When questioned about the team’s chances of winning the World Cup, especially after their performance in the AFCON final, Zubairu’s confidence was clear.
