Rivers Government Commits to Excellence in Financial Management

The Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ebok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd) has reiterated the commitment of his administration to ensuring excellence in the management of the State resources.

He reaffirmed his commitment at the opening ceremony of a Four-Day capacity building programme for Accountants, tagged: Empowering Transformation Training for Financial Excellence in Rivers State.

The Sole Administrator who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika said the training is relevant, crucial and strategic for the growth and sustainability of Rivers State and its economy in particular.

He emphasized that financial management is about trust, accountability and transparency in service delivery. He enjoined participants to take the training seriously and translate the knowledge acquired to better service delivery.

In her address, the Acting Head of Service, Dr (Mrs) Inyingi Brown lauded the Sole Administrator for his commitment to strengthening the workforce in Rivers State through supporting and approving various human capital development training programmes.

She described the training as a testament of the Sole Administrator’s resolve to reposition the State workforce for excellence and make it a shining light in Nigeria.

Dr Brown noted that the training is timely because of the need for transparency, accountability and prudence in financial management of public resources in the State and nation at large, adding that it is the responsibility of Accountants to ensure judicious application of funds, adherence to financial regulations and safeguard public trust.

She urged participants to be attentive, inquisitive and open-minded in embracing new and better ways of doing their jobs, stressing that “the training is aimed at sanitizing our payroll system, eliminate ghost workers and ensure that only genuine staff and pensioners benefit from the State resources”.

Giving an overview of the training, Mrs Modupe Thomas-Owoseni, a Partner with Phillip’s Consulting said that the training is designed to equip participants with tools to thrive in the rapid changing world. She appealed to participants to participate actively.

The Four-Day training programme is organized by Rivers State Ministry of Finance in partnership with Phillips Consulting and Wider Perspectives. Participants are Accountants drawn from various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the State.

It is expected that at the end of the training, participants would have learnt modern tools, global best practices, possess a transformative mindset to enable them thrive excellence, efficiency and innovation in financial management.
