‎Nigeria’s Dismal Performance Casts Doubt on Chelle’s World Cup Chances

‎The stage is prepared for Nigeria’s Super Eagles B team to compete in their final group match against Congo during the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship, CHAN, on Tuesday.

‎The head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, is presently managing the home-based team at CHAN.

‎Chelle is hoping for a more favorable outcome as he guides Nigeria to confront Congo in their concluding Group D match on Tuesday evening at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

‎Reports indicate that Chelle’s team has already been eliminated from the tournament after suffering defeats in their first two matches against Senegal (1-0) and Sudan (4-0), respectively.

‎Thus, regardless of the result of Tuesday’s match, the Super Eagles B team will head back to Nigeria following their game against Congo.

‎They are currently positioned at the bottom of the group, trailing behind Sudan (1st place with four points from two matches), Senegal (2nd place with four points from two matches), and Congo (3rd place with two points from two matches).

‎However, as focus shifts to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers scheduled for September, Nigeria’s football scene finds itself at a pivotal moment.

‎Chelle’s performance with the home-based Eagles at CHAN has raised questions about the Malian’s ability to influence the senior national team’s prospects of securing a spot in next year’s World Cup.

‎Moreover, his results with the home-based Super Eagles highlight issues concerning the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, as local players from the Nigerian domestic league struggle to perform well in African tournaments.

‎As Nigeria gears up for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Uganda and South Africa, the worries surrounding Chelle’s coaching strategies, the NPFL, and the home-based Super Eagles amid their disappointing performance at CHAN remain critical.

‎Ibrahim Lawal has asserted that the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, erred in appointing Chelle to coach the home-based Eagles at CHAN.

‎He stated that a coach from the NPFL should have been in charge of the Super Eagles B team at CHAN instead of Chelle.

‎”A coach from the local league should have been appointed to manage them,

‎”Chelle ought to focus more on the home-based players he intends to include in the main Super Eagles squad to help Nigeria qualify for the World Cup.”
