According to unconfirmed reports reaching our news desk this morning, a fire has broken out along Eneka Road in Port Harcourt. The report has it that properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed in the incident. While detailed information remains scarce, unverified sources suggest the fire has since been contained.
This latest report, though unconfirmed, raises serious concerns for business owners in the city, especially in light of the recent devastating fire at 57 Azikiwe Street, Mile 2 Diobu. The fire, which occurred on Friday, August 15, 2025, destroyed goods and property valued at millions of naira.
Traders who were victims of the Diobu fire have voiced their concerns about the constant threat of fire outbreaks in the city. According to a report from Vanguard, Mr. Wisdom Jack, an ice block machine dealer who lost everything in the fire, lamented that he lost materials and goods “running into millions” and added, “I don’t have anybody to run to.”
Another affected shop owner, who was identified only as Chigozie, revealed to The Nation Newspaper that he lost two weaving machines, three industrial machines, and over N1 million in cash. He recounted, “I lost all. But I know my God will make a way for me.”
The frequent occurrence of fire outbreaks poses a significant threat to the economic landscape of Port Harcourt. Businesses suffer direct losses through the destruction of goods and infrastructure, while livelihoods are disrupted, and recovery efforts can be financially draining.

Given the low insurance penetration among small and medium-sized enterprises in Nigeria, many business owners bear the full brunt of such losses, which can lead to permanent business closures and an increase in unemployment.
Speaking on the issue of fire safety and prevention, Engr. Emeka Eze, a certified fire safety consultant, has previously emphasized the importance of proactive measures.
“Businesses must prioritize regular safety audits, invest in fire suppression systems like extinguishers and smoke detectors, and ensure that staff are adequately trained on emergency procedures,” he stated in a recent interview with a national business publication. He also highlighted the need for stricter enforcement of building codes and safety regulations by relevant government agencies.
While we await official confirmation and further details on the reported Eneka Road fire, The Port City News is committed to providing timely updates as they become available. This incident underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and investment in fire safety measures to safeguard lives, properties, and the economic well-being of our community.
