Telephone Service Quality in Nigeria Set to Improve Within Nine Months — NCC

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, says Nigerians should expect significant improvements in telephone service quality within the next six to nine months.

Speaking at an interactive session with journalists in Lagos, Maida revealed that telecom operators have begun taking delivery of equipment worth about $1 billion since June 2025, aimed at upgrading existing infrastructure, building new base stations, and expanding fibre networks across the country—starting from the North Central region.

He attributed this investment wave to recent regulatory reforms that have encouraged network expansion and service upgrades. However, he noted that persistent challenges, including frequent fibre cuts, vandalism, theft of generators and batteries, site closures, and multiple taxation, continue to undermine service delivery.

According to Maida, operators have been recording over 1,100 fibre cuts daily, along with hundreds of access denials and theft incidents.

To tackle the problem, the NCC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministries of Works and Environment to create a digital platform that will notify telecom operators ahead of construction projects that might affect their infrastructure.

While acknowledging that tariff adjustments approved earlier in the year were expected to aid service improvements, Maida cautioned that the benefits of ongoing investments will take time to fully materialise. He urged the industry to move quickly to keep pace with global advancements, noting, “The world is already talking about 6G, and Nigeria cannot afford to fall behind.”
