Difficult Challenge Awaits D’Tigers Against The Defending Champions

As per the latest report, it is stated that Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, will persist in their quest to secure a second continental title as they face off against the defending champions and three-time titleholders, Tunisia, in their second round-robin match today (Friday) at the 2025 FIBA Men’s AfroBasket championship taking place in Angola.

‎The 2015 champions, aiming to break a 10-year trophy drought, commenced their AfroBasket journey with a solid 77-59 win over Madagascar on Wednesday.

‎Key to that victory was Caleb Agada, who achieved a game-high 22 points, leading Nigeria to a significant win, while veteran Stan Okoye also contributed with a double-figure points total.

‎However, when Coach Mohammed Abdulrahman’s team faces the Tunisians at the Pavilhao Multiusos de Luanda, they will encounter a squad that experienced a surprising 86-65 loss to the Indomitable Lions in their opening group stage match. This unexpected defeat to Cameroon marked the end of Tunisia’s decade-long unbeaten streak in the AfroBasket tournament.

‎Before Wednesday night, Tunisia’s last loss in the tournament occurred during the third-place match in the 2015 edition. Notably, that was the tournament in which Nigeria claimed its first and only African title under the guidance of William Voigt.

‎Tunisia may be missing the pair of Makram Romdhane, who has retired, and veteran Radhouane Slimane.

‎Nevertheless, they will rely on the scoring ability of Jawhar Jawadi, who netted 16 points in the defeat to Cameroon. His teammates, Mohamed Ochi and Omar Abada, also contributed with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

‎With the top position still up for grabs between the two nations, a victory for either team would significantly enhance their chances of securing an automatic berth in the quarter-finals of this quadrennial competition.
