NCC Urges Public to Protect Telecoms Infrastructure

NCC

Nigeria’s telecom regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has emphasised the need for increased public collaboration in protecting telecommunications infrastructure. The commission warned that disruptions to these services could significantly impact both the economy and national security.

The NCC issued this statement on Wednesday following its successful intervention in a dispute with the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria, preventing a planned strike. The strike, which was over fuel supply issues, threatened to disrupt diesel deliveries to numerous telecom sites. Many of these sites depend on generators to maintain operations due to Nigeria’s inconsistent power supply.

The intervention, facilitated by the Office of the National Security Adviser and the NCC, highlighted the vulnerability of the country’s communication networks. Without fuel, operators would struggle to keep base stations operational, potentially leaving millions without access to voice and data services.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu stated, “Telecommunications infrastructure is the foundation of our connectivity and digital economy. Any disruption has significant consequences for service delivery, economic stability, and national security.”

NCC Chief Executive Officer Aminu Maida added that the agency would continue to enforce technical standards and collaborate with security agencies, operators, and the public to protect these assets.

He encouraged Nigerians to view the infrastructure as a “shared national asset” that supports various essential services, including business, healthcare, and education. He also noted the importance of mediation in resolving disputes and preventing service interruptions.
