Ajibade: We Are Yet To Receive The Promised $100,000

Rasheedat Ajibade

Rasheedat Ajibade, the dynamic captain and forward of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, has publicly expressed her growing frustration over the prolonged delay in disbursing promised allowances and bonuses to the team. During an interview on an upcoming episode of ‘With Chude,’ hosted by renowned media personality Chude Jideonwo, Ajibade revealed that the players have yet to receive the $100,000 cash reward and additional entitlements pledged by authorities. Despite repeated assurances from officials, she emphasised the team’s disappointment, stating, “We’re still waiting for the funds. All those promises you’ve heard about, none have been fulfilled.” The ongoing delays have left the players feeling neglected and disheartened.

Ajibade further elaborated that officials had informed the team that funds were allocated for their rewards, yet no payments have materialised. “We’ve been told the money is there, but nothing has reached us. Players are practically begging for what’s owed,” she said, highlighting the emotional and financial strain the situation has caused. She pointed out that match bonuses and other dues remain unresolved, describing the payment process as “still in progress.” Ajibade passionately called on the relevant authorities to act swiftly and honour their commitments, underscoring the toll these delays have taken on the team’s morale and well-being.

The promises in question stem from the Super Falcons’ remarkable achievement at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where they clinched their historic 10th title in July 2024. In recognition of their success, President Bola Tinubu announced a generous reward of $100,000 for each player, along with additional bonuses, as a gesture of national pride and appreciation. However, months later, the players are still awaiting these funds, a situation Ajibade finds particularly discouraging given the team’s dedication and sacrifices for the country.

Reflecting on her personal journey, Ajibade shared insights into her challenging beginnings in football. She spent a decade playing for FC Robo Queens in the Nigeria Women’s Football League without earning a salary, describing the experience as “incredibly tough.” Growing up in a bustling compound in Lagos’ Mushin area, home to nearly 100 people, she resorted to cleaning toilets and bathrooms to make ends meet. Ajibade’s perseverance led her from FC Robo Queens to Avaldsnes IL in Norway at age 17, and later to Atletico Madrid Feminino in 2021, where she continues to shine as a global talent. Her story underscores the resilience behind her leadership and her determination to advocate for her teammates’ rightful dues.
