Personalised Learning: A Revolutionary Approach to Education

Personalised learning is an approach to teaching that recognises that each student learns differently. It involves creating a learning plan that is tailored to each student’s strengths, weaknesses, and interests. This approach allows students to learn at their own pace and provides them with the support and resources they need to succeed.

Personalised learning has several benefits, including:

  • Increased student engagement: When students are able to learn in a way that is tailored to their needs and interests, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated.
  • Improved student outcomes: Personalised learning can lead to improved academic achievement and increased student confidence.
  • Better teacher-student relationships: Personalised learning allows teachers to build stronger relationships with their students and provide more effective support.

TPCN Correspondent spoke with several students who have experienced personalised learning in their schools, shared their various experiences.

  • “I love that I can work at my own pace and focus on the topics that interest me the most. It’s made learning so much more enjoyable.” – Purity from Total Child School, Port Harcourt.
  • - “Personalised learning has helped me to understand the material better and has given me the confidence to take on more challenging class work .” – David from Diamond Hill Montessori School, Rukpokwu.
  • - “I feel like I’m in control of my learning, and that’s an empowering feeling. I can ask for help when I need it, and my teacher is always there to support me.” – Chizaram from Zion International Schools Diobu.

Implementing personalised learning in schools requires a shift in teaching practices and a commitment to providing students with the support and resources they need. Here are some strategies that schools can use to implement personalised learning:

  • Use technology to support learning: Technology can be used to provide students with access to a wide range of learning resources and tools.
  • - Provide choices and flexibility: Offering students choices and flexibility in their learning can help to increase engagement and motivation.
  • - Use data to inform instruction: Teachers can use data and assessment results to inform their instruction and make adjustments to meet the needs of individual students.
  • - Foster a growth mindset: Encouraging students to view challenges as opportunities for growth and development can help to promote a love of learning.

While personalised learning has many benefits, there are also challenges to implementing this approach. Some of the challenges include:

  • Teacher training and support: Teachers need training and support to effectively implement personalised learning.
  • - Resources and funding: Personalised learning requires significant resources and funding to provide students with the support and tools they need.
  • - Equity and access: Ensuring that all students have access to personalised learning opportunities is a significant challenge.

Despite these challenges, personalised learning offers many opportunities for students, teachers, and schools. By providing students with a tailored learning experience, schools can increase engagement, improve outcomes, and prepare students for success in the 21st century.

We spoke with several teachers who have implemented personalised learning in their classrooms. Here’s what they had to say:

  • “Personalised learning has allowed me to get to know my students on a deeper level and tailor my instruction to meet their individual needs. It’s been a game-changer for my teaching practice.” – Mrs Love.
  • - “I love seeing my students take ownership of their learning and work at their own pace. It’s amazing to see the growth and progress they’re making.” – Mr. Emmanuel, primary 5 math teacher
  • - “Personalised learning has helped me to identify areas where my students need extra support and provide targeted interventions. It’s made a huge difference in their understanding and achievement.” – Mr. Kenneth, a home lesson teacher
