The Federal Government has intervened in the case of Comfort Emmanson, the passenger jailed after her altercation with Ibom Air staff, directing the withdrawal of all charges against her and her immediate release from prison.
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo announced the decision on Wednesday, revealing that the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has also been instructed to revoke the lifetime travel ban previously imposed on Emmanson.
“After reviewing the case, I have advised Ibom Air to withdraw their complaint against Ms. Emmanson, who has shown genuine remorse during police questioning with her lawyer present,” Keyamo stated.
The minister confirmed that the Commissioner of Police for the Airport Command and the prosecution team would complete necessary legal procedures to secure Emmanson’s release from Kirikiri Correctional Centre before the weekend.

This development follows the August 10 incident where Emmanson was arrested after a heated confrontation with cabin crew aboard a Uyo-Lagos flight, which escalated into a physical altercation. While aviation authorities initially emphasised strict enforcement of passenger conduct rules, the government’s intervention signals consideration of proportional justice.
Industry analysts suggest the resolution may prompt reviews of airline passenger management protocols, particularly regarding conflict de-escalation techniques and disciplinary measures.
