Court Discharges Comfort Emmanson Over Ibom Air Incident

Comfort Emmason

An Ikeja Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ogba, Lagos, has discharged Comfort Emmanson, the passenger accused of unruly behaviour and assault aboard an Ibom Air flight, following a formal withdrawal of the case by the Airport Police Command.

Presiding Magistrate Olanrewaju Salami struck out the five-count charge against Emmanson after Police Prosecutor Oluwabunmi Adeitan informed the court that the complainant and the airline were no longer interested in pursuing the matter.

“The complainant and the airline have withdrawn their interest in the case,” Adeitan stated, citing instructions from police authorities.

Emmanson had earlier pleaded not guilty to charges bordering on disrupting public peace, assaulting crew members, and conducting herself in a manner capable of breaching public order during her arraignment on Monday, August 11.

The incident, which sparked nationwide debate, involved Emmanson allegedly slapping crew members, tearing off a flight attendant’s wig, and attempting to use a fire extinguisher as a weapon aboard a flight from Uyo to Lagos.

Her discharge comes amid growing public scrutiny over selective justice, with many comparing her swift prosecution to the lenient treatment of Fuji musician KWAM1, who was accused of obstructing a ValueJet aircraft but later appointed an airport security ambassador.

The court’s decision has triggered mixed reactions online, with some celebrating the outcome as a victory for fairness, while others question the sudden withdrawal of such a high-profile case.
