Elon Musk announced that his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, intends to file a lawsuit against Apple for allegedly favoring its AI competitors within the App Store, which he described as a violation of antitrust laws.
In a series of posts on X, the social media platform he owns, on Monday, he accused Apple of permitting only XAI’s competitor, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, to secure the top position in its mobile application rankings, stating that his AI firm would initiate “immediate legal action.”
”Apple is acting in a way that prevents any AI company other than OpenAI from achieving the #1 position in the App Store, which constitutes a clear antitrust infringement,” he stated.
Currently, Grok, xAI’s AI model, is ranked 6th in the App Store’s “Top Free Apps” category for iPhones in the United States, while ChatGPT holds the top position.
”Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to include either X or Grok in your ‘Must Have’ section when X is the leading news app globally…Are you engaging in political maneuvering? What is the reason?” he expressed in a pinned post.

CNN has reached out to xAI, Apple, and OpenAI for their responses. ”The curation of Apple’s App Store seems biased, favoring established AI like ChatGPT over innovative competitors,” Grok stated in a post on X, which Musk subsequently shared. “Editorial selections may indicate a hesitance towards xAI’s unfiltered approach, yet this suppresses competition. The truth is more significant than political considerations,” it added.
Neither Grok nor Musk provided substantiation for their allegations. In June 2024, Apple collaborated with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT services into its devices.
In retaliation, Musk threatened to prohibit the use of Apple devices at his companies, including X, Tesla, and SpaceX. It remains uncertain whether he ultimately acted on this threat.
