The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) is currently underway, with Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda hosting the event. Nigeria aims to maintain its tradition of featuring a high number of local players, but they face a tough Group D, which includes Senegal, Congo, and Sudan.
After the first round of games, Senegal has 3 points, and both Congo and Sudan have 1 point each, while Nigeria has no points.
Senegal started the tournament by beating Nigeria 1-0. Meanwhile, Congo and Sudan tied 1-1.
So right now, Senegal is leading the group, and Congo and Sudan are tied on one point each. Nigeria is last with zero points. The next game between Nigeria and Sudan at Zanzibar’s Amaan Stadium is really important.
If Nigeria wins, they’ll get 3 points and will be on the same level as Senegal, which could help them get into the quarter-finals. But if they draw or lose, they might find themselves in a tough spot.
For Sudan, a win would give them 4 points and guarantee their spot in the next round. Even a draw would still keep their hopes alive for the final matchday.

Nigeria vs. Sudan CHAN Head-to-Head
Nigeria and Sudan have only met once before in CHAN. That was in the 2018 CHAN semi-finals in Morocco. Nigeria won 1-0, with Gabriel Okechukwu scoring the only goal in the 16th minute at the Stade de Marrakech.
This win helped Nigeria reach the final, where they lost to Morocco. Sudan got third place. Besides that game, Nigeria and Sudan have never faced each other in the CHAN finals.
Likely Lineups
Nigeria (Probable XI): Reports suggest they might use a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation. Veteran goalkeeper Lawal Mustapha is likely to start.
