As the Super Eagles B team gears up to face Sudan in their second Group D match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) today, it has been disclosed that goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena remains sidelined due to a knee injury and has yet to recover. However, defender Abdulrafiu Taiwo has returned to training.
The medical staff has confirmed that Ani can only participate in light training sessions, effectively excluding him from tomorrow’s match against Sudan. His absence will be a considerable setback for the Nigerian team, as his experience and steadiness in goal have been crucial assets.
Compounding the team’s earlier concerns, there were fitness issues regarding left-back Abdulrafiu Taiwo, who had missed several training sessions due to a muscle strain.
Nevertheless, head coach Eric Sekou Chelle received some good news as Taiwo rejoined full training during the final session and is anticipated to be available for selection. His return provides essential depth and balance to the defense.

In response to Ani’s injury, the Nigeria Football Federation acted quickly to bolster the goalkeeping unit by signing Ebenezer Harcourt, a talented Under-20 goalkeeper. Harcourt’s addition has not only filled the immediate gap in goalkeeping but has also significantly boosted the squad’s morale.
Despite his youth, Harcourt is known for his quick reflexes and calmness under pressure, qualities that could be crucial in a high-stakes match like this. His presence has injected new energy into the team, with teammates rallying around the young player during training.
