INEC Cautions Political Parties Against Early Campaigns Ahead Of 2027 Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a firm warning to political parties and aspirants, urging them to desist from any form of premature electioneering activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

‎Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, gave the caution in a statement on Monday while addressing growing public concerns over the increasing visibility of political posters, subtle endorsements, and verbal skirmishes among politicians—indications many have interpreted as early campaign moves.

‎Oyekanmi emphasised that the commission is yet to release an official timetable or schedule for the 2027 elections. As such, no party primaries have been held, nor has any political party formally nominated candidates for the upcoming polls.

‎Quoting Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, Oyekanmi clarified that campaign activities are legally restricted to a period beginning 150 days before the election and must cease 24 hours before the commencement of voting. He also highlighted Section 95(1), which mandates that campaigns must align strictly with INEC’s rules and guidelines.

‎“While Nigerians are free to discuss political issues and express opinions regarding the next general election, overt campaigns or solicitation of votes for 2027 are not only premature but also unlawful,” Oyekanmi stated.

‎He further revealed that the issue was addressed during INEC’s recent quarterly consultative meeting with political parties, where the commission reiterated the need for strict adherence to the law.

‎INEC maintains that it expects full compliance from all registered political parties and their supporters, reiterating its commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
