‘D’Tigress Arrives Abuja with Trophy to Meet Tinubu

Following their historic fifth consecutive title win at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship, Nigeria’s celebrated women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress, landed in Abuja on Monday.

The team, along with their officials, was flown into the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on two chartered flights, carrying the AfroBasket trophy they had just secured in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The arrival was met with a welcoming party that included representatives from the National Sports Commission, the Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, and the Association of Nigerian Women in Sports, as well as a small group of fans.

This victory not only adds another championship trophy to their collection but also solidifies their place in African women’s basketball history with an unparalleled feat.

D’Tigress’s journey to this championship concluded with a decisive 78-64 victory over Mali in the final match at the Palais des Sports de Treichville.

This win marks their seventh overall AfroBasket title and extends their incredible winning streak in the tournament to 29 games, a run of dominance that began a decade ago in 2015.

They are expected to meet with President Bola Tinubu, who, in a statement posted on his X page, congratulated them and expressed his anticipation of their visit.

Tinubu wrote, “You did it, girls! D’Tigress. Superb performance to become 5x consecutive Champions of Africa and seventh overall. Well done, Coach Rena and the team. You have made Nigeria proud. I am expecting you all, along with the trophy. #MissionV – Done & Dusted.”
