AAPW Drives Climate Advocacy in Communities through Town Hall Meetings

As climate change continues to exacerbate environmental degradation across the Niger Delta, Academic Associates Peace Works (AAPW), with support from the Embassy of Denmark in Nigeria, has launched a series of community town hall meetings to strengthen grassroots participation in climate action and environmental governance.

The town halls, held across selected communities in Bayelsa and Delta States, are part of an ongoing initiative titled “Advancing Community Capacity to Mitigate Climate Change Impact and Develop Green and Blue Economy in the Niger Delta.”

According to the AAPW Snr. Communications Officer, Success Nwanedo, said the project aims to build local ownership of environmental policies and empower communities to advocate for sustainable solutions to climate-related challenges.

At the core of the discussions was a pressing concern: the need to move environmental laws from policy documents into visible, practical implementation. Participants voiced their frustrations over oil spills contaminating water bodies, gas flaring affecting public health, unregulated trawling destroying marine life, and the lack of sanitation infrastructure in their communities.

Concerns were also raised over weak enforcement of environmental policies, poor access to climate-resilient economic opportunities, and the marginalization of key groups particularly youth, women, farmers, and fishers in planning and decision-making processes.

Despite these challenges, the town hall sessions became platforms for solution-oriented dialogue.

Community members advocated for the establishment of waste management systems, better access to agricultural resources and credit, stricter enforcement of conservation laws, and a localisation of policies to reflect the lived realities of Niger Delta residents.

According to AAPW, the outcomes of these engagements will shape further advocacy efforts at state and federal levels.

The organisation plans to continue collaborating with traditional institutions, policymakers, and local stakeholders to translate community input into actionable policy changes. These efforts include strengthening local bylaws, enhancing technical capacity, and fostering greater accountability in environmental governance.
