Rivers State Ministry of Health Flags Off 2025 Breastfeeding Week

The need to ensure comprehensive Breastfeeding of new borns have been advocated as the Rivers State Ministry of Health Flagged off the 2025 Breastfeeding week.

Speaking at the event in Port Harcourt, the Senior Special Adviser on Health to Rivers State Government, Professor Chituru Orluwene said that the importance of Breastfeeding to both new born and the lactating mother cannot be overemphasized.

“If you remove man from that natural God given gift and talent, man will begin to die, so breast milk is natural and it’s from God. If you remove any child, any infant from that one, that child will begin to die.”

Breast milk is mutually beneficial, it’s not a selfish exercise that benefits only the baby alone. It protects the baby from infections and diseases, apart from the bonding between mother and the baby, it also protect the mother from diseases such as cancer.”

He called on stakeholders to pay special attention to ensure that the requisite support needed for comprehensive Breastfeeding of new born to take place are adequately provided.

Also speaking at the event, the Acting Permanent Secretary Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr. Vincent Wachukwu said the World Breastfeeding week was an ideal time to beam spotlight on the important role Breastfeeding plays in the well-being of children.

He noted that the ministry will focus on sensitizing people on the need to support breastfeeding friendly environment lactating mothers.

“It is a time to acknowledge the incredible power of breast milk, the ideal nutrition for babies and the vital role breastfeeding plays in building healthier futures.”
