Google to Start Using AI to Identify Users Under 18

‎The technology leader, Google, has declared its intention to use artificial intelligence (AI) to assess whether a user is below the age of 18.

‎The AI Age estimation feature is set to be introduced in the upcoming weeks within the United States, targeting a “limited group of users,” with aspirations for broader implementation.

‎In a blog post, Google stated, “These initiatives, which we have already put into practice in certain markets where they have proven effective, aim to identify users who are either above or below 18, enabling us to offer more age-appropriate experiences for those under 18.”

‎Recently, the organization revealed that it will initiate the use of AI on YouTube to ascertain the age of users in the US, starting from August 13.

‎Should Google determine that a user is under 18, it will enforce age-appropriate safeguards, including the activation of YouTube Digital Wellbeing tools such as reminders to take breaks and go to bed, limiting repetitive views of specific content types, disabling the timeline feature in Maps, turning off personalized advertising, restricting access to age-sensitive ad categories, and preventing users from using apps that are designated for adults on Google Play.

‎In cases where a user is mistakenly classified as under 18, Google will permit them to confirm their age by submitting a photo of a government-issued ID or a selfie.
