Constitutional Amendments Needed to Implement Local Government Autonomy – Jamala

A Constitutional Lawyer and a Public Affairs Analyst, Mr. Living Jamala, has stressed the need for constitutional amendments to effectively implement the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy.

Speaking during an interview with our correspondent, Jamala noted that various sections of the constitution require amendments to align with the Supreme Court’s decision.

He stressed that until the necessary amendments are made, it is unlikely that states will comply with the Supreme Court ruling and that the local government autonomy can only be effective if the constitutional laws that hinder its implementation are amended.

Mr. Jamala noted that local government chairmen are well-positioned to manage funds effectively because they are closer to the people and with access to resources, they can tackle economic challenges in their local government areas more efficiently.

The Supreme Court’s landmark judgment in 2024, affirming the financial and administrative autonomy of local governments, has sparked a renewed debate on the need for constitutional reforms to ensure effective implementation.
