Tragedy Strikes in Rivers as Auto Crash Claims Lives

A devastating accident occurred on Monday at the Rumuokoro axis of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, resulting in the loss of lives. According to reports, a UNIPORT shuttle bus collided with a stationary truck near the Eliozu Flyover, causing fatal injuries to three individuals, including a University of Port Harcourt student, an infant, and another person.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Rivers State, Inyang Umoh, said according to an eyewitness who attributed the cause of the crash to overspeeding said the driver of the bus lost control and rammed into the parked truck, leading to the tragic incident.

Contrary to social media reports claiming multiple student fatalities, the spokesperson for UNIPORT, Dr. Sammy Kpenu, confirmed that only one student, Silvia Oko, a 300-level Economics student, lost her life in the accident. Another student, Chidinma Blessing, sustained facial injuries and is receiving treatment at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

The Federal Road Safety Corps responded promptly to the incident, and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident. The authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified reports and to allow the investigation to take its course.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to exercise caution while on the road.
