Inter Milan is ramping up efforts to secure the signing of Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman, with club president Giuseppe Marotta calling this a “decisive week” in their pursuit of the Nigerian forward.
Speaking during Inter’s preseason press briefing on Monday, Marotta confirmed the club’s interest in Lookman but urged caution regarding the speculation surrounding the player’s next move.
The Nerazzurri have already made an initial offer of €40 million, which was turned down by Atalanta, who are reportedly holding out for €50 million. Talks between the two Serie A clubs are expected to intensify between Monday, July 28, and Wednesday, July 30.
“I won’t hide the fact that we consider Lookman an excellent player,” Marotta stated. “Our scouting department and the coaching staff have spoken highly of him. He’s certainly not a new name to us.”
However, Marotta emphasized that discussions remain at an early stage and that Inter are handling the matter with due respect for Atalanta.
“He is still an Atalanta player, and we fully respect that. We would never act in a way that could be seen as disruptive,” he added.
The Inter president acknowledged having initiated contact with Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi, noting that such dialogue is part of the usual transfer process.
“There’s been some back and forth with Percassi, as you’d expect in these types of negotiations. Everyone tries to get the best deal,” Marotta said.

Asked whether this week could prove critical in sealing the transfer, he responded, “Absolutely. The next two to three days will be pivotal. If Atalanta is willing to sell and the terms align, we’re ready to move forward with formal negotiations.”
Marotta also addressed concerns over Lookman’s age, as the 27-year-old will turn 28 later this year, making him an exception to Inter’s usual focus on younger, high resale value talents.
“He might not fit the typical investment model, but he offers immediate quality,” Marotta explained. “A good mix of youth and experience is important for any team looking to stay competitive.”
Lookman, who has impressed since joining Atalanta, remains Inter’s top target as they seek to strengthen their attack ahead of the new Serie A season.
