NGOs Applaud HYPREP’s Progress, Pledge Ongoing Support for Sustainability

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD) and Friends of the Earth International, have expressed satisfaction with the ongoing work of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) under the leadership of Professor Nenibarini Zabbey.

During a recent visit to several HYPREP project sites in Ogoniland, the delegations led by Dr Otive Igbuzor, Founding Executive Director of Centre LSD, and Hemantha Withanage, President of Friends of the Earth International, commended the visible achievements recorded by the Project.

The organisations noted progress in key areas such as the provision of safe drinking water, the construction of the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration (CEER), the Ogoni Specialist Hospital, and various livelihood empowerment initiatives.

They pledged to maintain strong advocacy for continued funding and long-term viability of these efforts.

At the Bomu waterfront, where HYPREP is undertaking mangrove restoration, representatives of the NGOs joined in planting mangroves as a gesture of solidarity and encouragement for the Project’s environmental recovery work.

According to HYPREP report 93% of the mangrove restoration initiative of phase 1 has been reached.

This engagement aligns with HYPREP’s broader strategy of collaboration with civil society organisations and development partners to ensure a holistic and sustainable clean-up of oil-impacted areas in Ogoniland.
