Pensioners in Rivers State under the state civil service retirees have taken a swipe at the state secretary of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Dr. Joseph Agbo over his comments on pensioners’ payments.
A press release signed by the Coordinator of the state civil service petirees, Comrade Isaac’ J. Urang described Agbo’s comments as ignorance, urging the public not to listen to him.
According to Comrade Urang: “The attention of the members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners particularly, pensioners of 2012 to date and the general public has been drawn to the press address by Comrade Dr. Joseph Agbo, the state secretary. His statement did not have the blessing of the state chairman, Comrade Collins Nwankwo on the meeting held by the pensioners on 16th July, 2025.
“Agho stated inter alia, that:
1) Pensioners have no plan to protest their unpaid pension benefits.
2) They are in dissident group
3) The man (Supposedly referring to Administrator) has presented a budget of $50 bn for pensioners.

Ordinarily, we pensioners from 2012 to date whose benefits have not been paid would have ignored Dr. Agbo’s statement, but for the interest of Justice and clarification to Rivers State Government and the general public, we hereby state as follows:
1) Agbo as the secretary of the state council of the NUP has never led any protest of any kind on pension matters. However NUP as a body has been protesting since 2014 over unpaid pension benefits while he (Agbo) stood aloof.
2) Rivers State Chapter of NUP is one body, under the leadership of Comrade Collins Nwankwo and every pensioner in the state belongs to the body. Consequently, there is no dissident group in the state and the use of the word dissidents on the set of pensioners’ connotes ignorance of Comrade Dr. Joseph Agbo.
3) Probably the secretary is suffering from a state of amnesia as he referred to the N50bn budget proposal as $50bn even when it is obvious that budget in Rivers State and Nigeria in general is being presented in naira.
IN CONCLUSION
Agbo has been antagonistic to every stakeholder of pension matters in the state. Indeed Agbo is the one who has never worked in the interest of pensioners in the state.
We hereby call on the state government and the general public to ignore Agbo vituperation on pensioners who held the meeting on July 16, 2025.”
