Tigo Introduces Solar Inverter Output Control For System Repowering

Tigo Energy has introduced a new solution that enables installers to manage the output of Tigo inverters via software during the commissioning phase.

By implementing power derating, which involves lowering the maximum AC power rating of an inverter, installers can modify the AC power rating during commissioning to align with specific system power targets required for incentives or to sustain the system’s power rating when upgrading an older solar system with a new inverter.

Wood Mackenzie reports that over one million residential solar installations in the U.S. are over ten years old, with an additional 400,000 expected to reach that milestone in the next five years. Tigo has highlighted that this trend is creating a rapidly expanding market for inverter replacements, enabling customers to rejuvenate solar installations that have surpassed their warranty and/or payback periods.

“In many cases, the systems we service have seen a decline in performance, and some have even stopped producing energy altogether, yet the homeowner has remained in the proverbial green for several years,” said Nick Sherman, CEO of EnergyAid, a provider of solar operations, maintenance, and repair services.

The Tigo Inverter Power Output Control (IPOC) aims to give installers the necessary flexibility when addressing AC output limitations on both new and existing residential solar systems. The company asserts that its products are highly compatible with the current range of power electronics.

Tigo’s inverters do not require the installation of a battery storage system and offer options for further enhancements, such as energy optimization, module-level system monitoring, and rapid shutdown protection.

“The vast majority of our customers are willing to make a relatively minor additional investment in their systems to ensure the continuous flow of solar energy, and with nameplate customization, Tigo makes this process seamless,” Sherman notInstallers can independently oversee the derating process using the Tigo El App during the system’s commissioning phase.
