Actor Timini Egbuson Shares Inspiring Career Lesson

Nollywood heartthrob Timini Egbuson has shared an inspiring story of resilience and divine timing, revealing how what seemed like a crushing career setback being rejected from Big Brother Africa, unexpectedly set him on the path to becoming one of Nigeria’s most sought-after actors.

During a candid conversation on The Culture League podcast, Egbuson recounted how close he came to being a housemate on the popular reality show.

He was among the final five contestants selected after rigorous screenings, even hiring a social media manager to handle his anticipated newfound fame.
Despite being told to “pack their bags” for the show, he was ultimately not chosen. “They didn’t pick me,” he admitted, recalling his disappointment.

While he couldn’t remember the exact season, he referenced fellow contestant Tayo Faniran (who appeared in Big Brother Africa: Hotshots in 2014) as one of the selected participants that year.

What seemed like a missed opportunity quickly turned into a pivotal moment. Shortly after the Big Brother rejection, Egbuson landed a role in MTV’s Shuga Naija, a groundbreaking drama series tackling youth issues like HIV, relationships, and social pressures.

His performance in Shuga Naija introduced him to a wider audience and established him as a talented actor. The show’s international platform gave him visibility beyond Nigeria, opening doors to bigger opportunities in Nollywood.

Egbuson, now one of Nollywood’s leading men, reflected on how his career might have unfolded differently had he entered the Big Brother house.

“The hype would have faded by now”. Reality TV fame is often short-lived, whereas acting provided sustainable growth. “I might not have made it in entertainment”

The structured path of acting allowed him to hone his craft, unlike the unpredictability of reality TV.

Since his Shuga Naija breakthrough, Egbuson has starred in blockbuster films like Elevator Baby, Breaded Life and A Tribe Called Judah. He won multiple awards, including Best Actor in a Drama at the 2021 AMVCA, become a fashion icon and youth mentor, inspiring aspiring actors with his story.

Timini’s story is a powerful testament to the saying, “When one door closes, another opens.” His experience reminds us that success isn’t always about getting what we want sometimes, it’s about what we didn’t get that sets us up for something even better.
