Truck Plunges into Eleme River, Others Blame Faulty Bridge

A truck conveying twelve feet container on Friday skidded off a bridge and fell into Aleto river, along the East-West Road, in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The incident which occurred at about 3pm, did not record any casualty as the driver of the truck came out unhurt, according to eyewitness account.

A community source whose name could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report told our correspondent that he does not know the exact number of occupants in the truck but efforts were on to recover the truck and the container.

“The truck, we learnt was heading to Port Harcourt from Eleme LGA before it lost control and fell into the river,” the source said.

You reall that five months ago, a Dutch expatriate who was the MD/CEO of the Rivers State Cassava Project Limited, Mr. Gibson Reuben, while trying to escape from kidnappers in a Hilux vehicle, lost control and plunged into same river and was reported dead.

Though efforts made by our correspondent to reach the state police authority for comments proved abortive.

There have been complaints on the Aleto bridge, with several appeals to the relevant authorities to put the bridge in good shape.

The bridge had long been viewed as a death trap, yet government continues to ignore all appeals relating to the fixing of the bridge.
