Dangote Slams Nigeria’s Low Power Generation Output

Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has criticized Nigeria’s low power generation output, stating that there’s no justification for the country’s struggles to produce more electricity. Dangote noted that his conglomerate alone generates over 1,500 megawatts for internal use, suggesting that Nigeria should aim for a much higher output.

Dangote believes Nigeria should generate around 50,000 to 60,000 megawatts of electricity, far surpassing the current 4,500 to 5,000 megawatts. He cited the success of the Dangote Refinery as proof that large-scale industrial projects are possible in Nigeria, including in the power sector.

The business mogul emphasized that building power infrastructure isn’t solely the government’s responsibility and that significant private sector participation is necessary and achievable.

He added that constructing the refinery was more challenging than increasing Nigeria’s power output to 30,000 megawatts.

Dangote’s remarks highlight the need for Nigeria to reassess its power generation capabilities and explore ways to increase output, potentially through deeper private sector involvement.
