Nigeria’s Looming Health Crisis: Diabetes and Obesity Rates Soar

Nigeria is facing a growing health emergency as diabetes and obesity cases surge across the nation. Health experts warn these lifestyle diseases could soon overwhelm the country’s healthcare system if urgent action isn’t taken.

Dr. Franklyn Nonso Iheagwam, a leading metabolic researcher, explains the crisis stems from Nigeria’s rapid urbanization. “As people move to cities, they’re eating more processed foods and moving less,” he says. “We’re seeing office workers and even children developing weight-related health problems that were rare just a generation ago.”

The numbers tell a worrying story as over 60% of Nigerians in recent studies are overweight or obese with urban areas like our very own Port Harcourt showing the highest rates of metabolic diseases which is why diabetes cases are rising sharply, with many undiagnosed.

The healthcare system isn’t prepared for this wave of chronic illnesses. Most clinics lack proper equipment to diagnose and treat these conditions. Insulin and testing kits remain too expensive for many patients, forcing them to rely on informal care.

“People only come to hospital when they’re already very sick,” says a Lagos physician. “By then, it’s often too late for simple interventions.”

Cultural shifts are making matters worse. Traditional fiber-rich diets are being replaced by fast food and sugary drinks. Schools and workplaces do little to promote physical activity. Social media spreads unhealthy lifestyle trends, especially among youth.

Experts are calling for urgent actions like better funding for non-communicable disease programs, community health education campaigns, workplace wellness initiatives and even research into local, affordable treatment options

“We’re at a tipping point,” warns Dr. Iheagwam. “If we don’t act now, we’ll face a full-blown health catastrophe in the coming years.”

The government is being urged to make diabetes and obesity prevention a national priority before the crisis spirals out of control.
