Bayelsa: Igbomotoru CDC Chairman Murdered in Ambush

In a tragic incident, Mr. Goodnews Manash, the Community Development Committee (CDC) chairman of Igbomotoru One in Bayelsa State, was killed in an ambush. The attack, which occurred late Sunday night around 10:30 PM, is suspected to be the work of gunmen involved in illegal crude oil bunkering.

According to community sources, the ambush took place near the community’s school compound as Mr. Manash was en route to his brother’s residence. The Igbomotoru community, known for its rich oil deposits and history of unrest, has seen increased violence.

A community leader, speaking anonymously, indicated that the attackers likely entered the town through a forested area, avoiding the military checkpoints along the waterways. This leader also noted that the gunmen, who had previously been driven out of the community by the Nigerian army, may have targeted the CDC chairman in retaliation for his efforts to restore peace.

Chief Ayibaikie Aseimighen Ofongo, the paramount ruler of Igbomotoru, confirmed the assassination. He reported receiving initial reports of the CDC chairman’s abduction before learning of his death. Community leaders are planning meetings before issuing an official statement.

Dr. Ayibaetare Easterday, the Press Secretary to the chairman of Southern Ijaw LGA, also confirmed the incident. He condemned the killing, emphasizing the negative impact it has on the community’s reputation. Dr. Easterday urged for peace and tolerance within the community. He also stated that the chairman was killed near someone else’s compound.
