The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honor former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on July 13 at 82 in a London hospital. The holiday, approved by President Bola Tinubu, is part of a seven-day national mourning period.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the holiday was described as a mark of respect for Buhari’s decades of service to Nigeria, both as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.

Northwest states also declared a holiday, while flags fly at half-mast nationwide. Conflicting reports emerged over the holiday’s authenticity, but the Interior Minister urged unity in honoring Buhari’s legacy.
