Wikki Tourists, and other 3 teams gain promotion to NPFL

Barau FC, Wikki Tourists, Warri Wolves, and Kun Khalifa have successfully earned promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) due to their exceptional performances in the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoffs.

From the Northern Conference, Wikki Tourists and Barau FC of Kano clinched the two available promotion spots. Wikki Tourists celebrated their return to the top tier after a two-year hiatus with an impressive 4-0 win against Yobe Desert Stars in their final group match held in Asaba.

A hat-trick from Wonderson Yakubu, complemented by a goal from Hassan, secured this significant victory, placing Abdu Maikaba’s squad at the top of Conference A with five points. They are now poised to face the Conference B champions in the playoff final.

Conversely, Barau FC made history by achieving their inaugural NPFL promotion with a 2-0 win over Doma United in Ozoro. Goals from Shammasu Muhd and Usman Maidubji propelled the Kano-based team to this remarkable achievement.

In the Southern Conference, Warri Wolves narrowly triumphed over Crown FC 2-1, while Kun Khalifa also secured a victory against Osun United by the same score, thus claiming the remaining two NPFL promotion slots.

Kun Khalifa, a privately owned club situated in Imo State, now joins Barau FC, Remo Stars, and Ikorodu City as one of the four privately owned teams in Nigeria’s premier league.

In light of his team’s success, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, expressed his joy regarding Barau FC’s promotion to the NPFL.

Unless unforeseen circumstances arise, the 2025/26 NPFL season is set to begin on Friday, August 22, 2025.
