The captain of Nigeria’s senior national team, Ahmed Musa, has stated that it would require a miracle for the team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, as per a report.
Currently, Nigeria is positioned 4th in their World Cup qualifying group, trailing six points behind the group leaders, South Africa, whom they will face in September when the qualifiers resume.
Nevertheless, there is a chance for Nigeria to close the gap by three points, as FIFA is expected to deduct three points from their total for having fielded an ineligible player during their 2-0 victory over Lesotho in the last round of matches.
Teboho Mokoena participated for over 80 minutes in that game, despite being under suspension due to two prior yellow cards. Despite this, Musa believes that it will be challenging for Nigeria to qualify for the tournament.

“Only a miracle can take Nigeria to the World Cup, because at this moment, we are in a dire situation. While we remain hopeful about qualifying for the World Cup, the reality is that we are in a very difficult position; only a miracle can lead Nigeria to the tournament,” he remarked while addressing the press for the first time in his role as the General Manager of the Nigeria Premier Football League team, Kano Pillars.
