UNICEF Report: 712 Children Infected With HIV Daily in 2024

A new UNICEF report has revealed a devastating reality: every day in 2024, an average of 712 children worldwide contracted HIV. The findings, released today, highlight the ongoing crisis despite global efforts to combat the disease.

The data shows 2.42 million children and adolescents (0-19 years) were living with HIV last year. Tragically, AIDS-related illnesses claimed the lives of 250 young people daily – deaths that experts say are largely preventable with proper treatment and care.

Sub-Saharan Africa remains the epicenter of the crisis, accounting for 86% of new infections among children under 14. The region bears 65% of the global HIV burden across all age groups.

While there has been progress – new infections in children have dropped 62% since 2010 – adolescents continue to be left behind. Infection rates among 15-19 year olds have only declined by 44% in the same period.

“The numbers are alarming, but they represent real children whose lives could be saved,” said a UNICEF spokesperson. “We have the tools to prevent these infections and deaths – what we need is the political will and resources to implement them.”

The report identifies inadequate access to prevention and treatment services as the key barrier, particularly in vulnerable communities. Without urgent action, experts warn, hundreds of children will continue to contract HIV every day.
