Super Falcons Leave It Late Against a Stubborn Botswana Defense

The Super Falcons of Nigeria had to leave it late against a stubborn Botswana team, who from the onset set up to at least secure a draw against the African powerhouse.

The game was hardly a one-sided affair, unless one-sided is defined by ball possession without adequate attempts on goal, because the Super Falcons of Nigeria scarcely troubled their opponents until the latter stages of the game.

It was then that the Botswana goalkeeper pulled off a fine save from an Echegini curler to keep her team in the game. Though it wasn’t to be for the Botswana team, as striker Ihezuo pounced on an Okoronkwo cross to give Nigeria the lead moments later, a lead which proved good enough to earn them all three points.

Today’s game is a clear reflection of how other nations have caught up with the Super Falcons of Nigeria, as opposed to the days when they used to beat every female African football nation with ease.

However, take nothing away from the Botswana women’s team, who gave their all to ensure the Super Falcons did not have it easy at any point in the game.

They lost not because the Super Falcons were the inferior team, but because time and chance happen as they do in all games, whether in male or female football. Those who are able to seize their chance when it presents itself usually end up victorious.

A 0–1 win against the lowest-ranked team of the 2025 WAFCON competition should serve as both an eye-opener and a motivation for the coaching team of the Super Falcons to go back to the drawing board.

They must see what can be done to improve the team in terms of creating and converting chances. Other teams will certainly take lessons from Botswana’s style to shut out the Super Falcons, and with a stronger attack, they could do more than just that.
