Obio/Akpor Administrator Begins Desilting Operation to Combat Flooding

‎As part of measures geared towards flood control across Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the Administrator, Dr. Ndu Walter, has flagged off desilting operations along SARS Road, a critical location known for frequent flooding and blocked drainage.

‎The exercise, which is aimed at restoring the free flow of stormwater and preventing the accumulation of floodwater following recent episodes of heavy rainfall that negatively impacted several parts of the local government area

‎During an on-site inspection, Dr. Walter, accompanied by the Chairman of the Environmental Sanitation Committee, Chief Kennedy Akaninwa, expressed concern over the magnitude of blocked drainage systems and the resultant environmental hazards.

‎“We can not sit back while our people suffer the effects of blocked drainage and environmental neglect. This desilting project is part of a wider, sustained response to ensure our communities are flood-resilient and livable,” the Sole Administrator stated.

‎The contractor handling the technical operation, Mr. Rabiu Kaintoye, confirmed that his team was fully mobilized and had commenced clearance of silt and other debris obstructing the drainage channels.

‎He urged traders and residents in the area to refrain from activities that block gutters, noting that such practices undermine the effectiveness of government interventions.

‎“We appeal to everyone doing business or residing along SARS Road to take ownership of the environment and avoid dumping refuse into the drains.”

‎The Administrator, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustaining good environmental health, stated that similar operations will be extended to other critical areas as part of the local government’s ongoing flood response program.
